Brand Analysis on Steam Whistle Brewery

It all started with three men with a dream. A dream to become owners of their own brewery. This dream first began in the spring of 1998 where Greg Taylor, Cam Heaps and Greg Cormwell aimed to make a Pilsner that would be highly competitive in the brewery industry. The “Three Fired Guys” put together their thoughts visions and passions together to create a business plan.

This award winning Pilsner has been the focus for Steam Whistle as a Canadian Premium Pilsner to be world-class and something that Canadians can be proud of. The special recipe which has been based on Europe’s well known brewery standards is one factor that sets this Pilsner apart from the competition. Steam Whistle uses only four natural ingredients for this amazing product. These ingredients include: spring water, malted barley, hops and yeast.

March of 2000 marked the day the first case of Steam Whistle Pilsner was sealed for sale. Passion, dedication and a unique green bottler are three main components as to what also sets Steam Whistle apart from their competition.

This proud independently owned brewery is one of Ontario’s top selling brands. Steam Whistle is now expanding their clientele to Alberta and British Columbia and are ready to start filling orders to send this unique pilsner to Germany, one of the worlds most renowned and recognized places for premium beers.

The design of the bottles is a distinctive look based on the bottles from the late 40’s and early 50’s. With a painted label and non-twist off tops make these bottles very unique in design. The bottles are made with 30% more glass than regular beer bottles on the market and can last for up to 35 uses. Steam Whistle is also very involved in conserving the environment and taking green initiatives for the future.

Green initiatives are a large part of Steam Whistles beer. The beer is made with all natural ingredients and its a big part of the value Steam Whistle wants to promote. Like stated before Steam Whistle since March of 2000 Steam Whistle uses 30% more glass as a reusable source and can be used up to 35 times cutting down in environmental waste. Steam Whistle also paints on their logo and bottles as a more tree friendly way or preserving the use of paper and environmental chemicals.

Steam Whistle was the first company to use biodegradable cups for all outdoor events. The biodegradable cups are made up of cornstarch resin that is 100% compost-able within 50 days of use. This in turn cuts down on plastic waste and decreases the amount of pollution. Steam Whistle also uses wind power for a source to electricity and uses some bio fuel for all trucks shipping the Steam Whistle pilsner. There are many other forms of green initiatives that Steam Whistle practices for a greener more echo-friendly solutions.

Therefore Steam Whistle is a very unique and well established organizations that are taking the right steps to become a well know Brewery across not only Canada but across the world. With the unique green bottles and painted on logo this pilsner makes a very strong and bold presence in the beer market. Also With all the green initiatives taken this company sets itself above and beyond the competition. All of these factors make Steam Whistle a brand we as Canadians can truly be proud of.

Casino Loyale

On Thursday October 15th the Public Relations class put on a fund raiser for United Way,The theme for the fund raiser was called Casino Loyale a title I believe was a great success. I felt that this opportunity was a great way for our public Relations class to get involved and become part of a group working together for a great cause.

One of the first steps to getting ready for Casino Loyale was to figure out a venue, theme, prizes, setting a goal of $1500 and designating people to certain tasks. Most people had chosen certain organizations where they had to ask for donations which we later used as prizes.

During Casino Loyale my task was to go around the school and find people who would donate $2.00 to play black jack and win a price. I was set up with a partner for this task and set up a black jack table in the Loyalist College Pioneer building cafeteria. My partner and I went around the school visiting classes to participate in the event and make donations to United Way. This event started off really well we ended up making a lot of donations for United Way.  This had to have been the most fun part personally for me. I really enjoyed playing black jack with people and helping to raise money not only for United Way but also working together as a team and supporting each other.

The games we as a class decided on having for Casino Loyale where black jack, plinko, and way of the wheel, we designated people to run these events in various locations. Stations were set up in the Loyalist Cafeteria, shark tank pub, Loyalist Pioneer cafeteria as well as runners who would go around the college either playing black jack or just collecting money.

Casino Loyale went really well and many people had won prizes all while donating money.  In the end we as a class worked together and had a lot of good prizes for the winners at Casino Loyale. I believe this fund raiser helped bring the class together as a team and gave us a more hands on approach to fund raising. Basically this opportunity really helped everyone build a better understanding of how much really goes into event planning as well as fund raising.

This was a great opportunity to for all PR students who got involved with Casino Loyal to add this onto their resume. Especially these days when people are looking for a job volunteer work is a really good experience and great asset to have.

This year alone the Loyalist College PR class surpassed their original goal of $1500 and raised over $1800. This is the most money the PR class has ever raised.  With a strong dedicated team working together and keeping each other motivated really made a big difference.  It is no wonder with all the support and hard work the Casino Loyale United Way fund raiser was such a great success.  I feel privileged and honored to have shared this amazing opportunity with my class mates and faculty.

Portfolio Development

In order to pass the Post-Graduate Public Relations program at Loyalist College we must complete a portfolio that displays work we have done during the school year. These items showcase the strengths students have and the portfolio displays them in a professional and organized way. For my next portfolio article I have decided to create a press release.

A press release is a great way to show your understanding of the industry and how to properly and professionally write other types of release documents. If written well a press release can have a large impact in a community or public, in-turn this can create a lot of buzz or awareness for the person or organization releasing the document.

I have decided to do my press release on the Friends of the Trail and Hike Ontario because of my volunteer commitment. Hike Ontario is hosting an Annual walk to the Summit, while Friends of the Trail are co-hosting this event. I have received all information for the release and wrote the information into a press release format, now need to send it back for further editing by the organization.

I find this press release to be a great opportunity to start my professional portfolio as well to strengthen my writing skills. In the end I am able to help out in the community and benefit with a strong and useful portfolio piece.

Friends of the trail

Being in the Public Relations program it is important especially these days to have volunteer work on your resume. I recently discovered the importance of volunteering when I heard a guest speaker tell me that having volunteer work on your resume will set you apart from the rest of the competition. I took this advice and now believe its true, especially when looking for future employment.

I recent found an organization called Friends of the Trail. I decided I wanted to take on this volunteer opportunity because it is a great way to get hands on start in the PR industry. I found it to be a great way to gain experience helping out with fund raisers, marketing and networking.

Friends of the train is an organization based out of Frankford Ontario. Friends of the Trail sets out to help preserve the historical trail as well to spread awareness of the tranquil and relaxing environment for the general public to experience.

In the end I can see this organization benefitting from taking me on as a volunteer and helping them to establish a stronger presence in Frankford and surrounding areas. I also hope to help raise funds and awareness for the trail. I can also benefit from this experience by networking with professionals as well to further my skills in PR, marketing and volunteering.

My Education At Loyalist College

It all began when I had finished high-school, I was not sure what I wanted to take in college. That is until I discovered the Business, Sales and Marketing course at Loyalist College. The two year program went really well, I discovered a strong interest in sales and marketing.

After graduating from the Business, Sales and Marketing Program I wanted to expand my education and try another program related to marketing and sales. That is why I transferred into the second year Advertising Program at Loyalist College. I found the advertising industry to be fast paced and demanding. I was a little overwhelmed with how much work goes into the creative aspect of the advertising industry. If I was to work in the advertising industry I would prefer to work in accounts, working with clients.

Now I am currently enrolled in the Post graduate Public Relations Program. So far I am really interested in the PR industry and learning about social media which is very important when it comes to PR. So far I am looking forward to learning more about the industry and the many job positions that are available.

Therefore i have had a great experience at Loyalist College and look forward to this upcoming year in Public Relations and hopefully find a career that best suits my passion for marketing, promoting, and creating relationships with people.

My First Blog...
